There were a few things I did that helped me with getting the class engaged and tackled some problems I've been having. A problem I tackled was a class that didn't seem interested in getting engaged with the classroom. The entire class was mostly silent for class discussions.Â
I started tackling it by giving students lots of choices in how they are taught, aiming to keep students engaged by letting them choose their method of learning. This gives them a sense of responsibility to follow through, and I've discovered, over the course of several weeks, that the students appear to tolerate group work more than other work.
Because the students are working in groups with a tight deadline (within one hour), I've observed that students in that class tend to put aside their other priorities and get something done because it's more real to them.
I'm unsure if it is the correct way to handle a classroom that's disinterested in working, but this was the best method I've found that got students to actually work. Using this for other classes had also been helpful.
ChatGPT is an epidemic in student work, so my mentor teacher and I planned it in a way that forced students to write their essays in order to prevent too much use of ChatGPT. Of course, you can't save every single student from using ChatGPT, but mitigating the use of the tool allowed students to edit their work.
